Install language packs on Windows 7 professional version

The following content is adapted from http://bauforum.wirklichewelt.de/forum_entry.php?nr=5844 and http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?/topic/25680-can-i-install-a-language-pack-in-windows-7-professional/page__p__245434&#entry245434.

We know Microsoft only allows ultimate Windows 7 users to enjoy multi-language user interface. Thanks to Martin Vogel, we can install the language pack on Windows 7 professional.

  1. Prepare your language pack DVD, insert it in D driver, here D is your DVD drive. Locate your required language pack. For example, if we want to install German language pack, the lp.cab file will have a path of D:\langpacks\de-de\lp.cab.

  2. Run command window with administrator privileges. To run it as an administrator, go to "all programs - accessories", right-click "command prompt" and choose "run as administrator".

  3. In the command window, type the following line and press Enter (dism"space"/online"space"/add-package"space"/packagepath:d:\langpacks\de-de\lp.cab), note that the space in between:
    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:d:\langpacks\de-de\lp.cab
  4. When a message pops up and tells you the operation is completed successfully, press "Windows key + R" to call the run window, type in regedit to run the registry editor.

  5. Navigate to \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\ UILanguage\eu-us and delete the key eu-us.

  6. Restart your system, now your Windows 7 Professional should be switched to the German language version.

  7. To change the language of "Starting Windows", run the following command in the command window (still take the German as example):

    bcdedit /set {current} locale de-de
    bcdboot %WinDir% /l de-de
Because I have no Windows 7 installed, cannot test the method. If you successfully installed your language pack, please either leave comments here or on Martin Vogel's page at http://bauforum.wirklichewelt.de/forum_entry.php?nr=5844.

Update:
  1. It seems this trick works on home premium version as well.
  2. I have changed an English Windows 7 system into a Chinese one.

Chinese version:

在Windows 7 专业版上安装语言包

  6. Hi, if you have followed the steps and type in the command exactly, burn the language pack to DVD and try it. You should check the DISM log file carefully first.

    1. If the Windows is SP1, you must apply the SP1 version of the Language Pack

  15. Make sure your computer is clean, no virus, and put the language file in the C or D root instead of your desktop.

  16. excellent!!! Thank you very much for helping me to install the language pack

    ReplyDelete
  17. The error 87 is that you wrote wrong the code check it and see if it is the same as here

    ReplyDelete
  18. since I installed the languagepack my PC is reacting must more slower !

have somebody the same experience ? and what to do ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. This should be caused by other software. Double check if there is a virus or too many applications start up with windows.

  20. I believe the Error 0x800f081e is due to the conflict of the version of the package and of the os

    ReplyDelete
  21. Instead of "de-de" like in the example, what should I write for the English language pack? "en-en"?

  22. than tou ahould download another package.
you couldent just change the foldername

  25. I have question about point 1 of this tutorial:

First my laptop doesn't have DVD unit. So can I put it on USB flash drive ?

Example: (F is USB falsh drive)

    F:\langpacks\en-us\lp.cab.

And second what do I put inside map F:\langpacks\ on my USB flash drive ? exe file or do I need to extract it first ?

    ReplyDelete
  26. USB flash drive is fine, or you can copy the file into c drive or d drive. You should put the cab file into the langpacks folder.

  27. It works.

I used this to change a machine from Nederlands (Dutch) to English. On my test machine it failed because somebody had provided me with the wrong language-pack and I installed Dutch instead of English. After removing all the keys and a reboot, I received a BSOD.

However, using a restorepoint I was able to fix the computer again. After using the correct languagepack, it worked perfected. :)

    Thank you (Windows 7 Professional - SP1)

  30. Hi,

I searched desperately all the web, because I don`t have Ultimate or Enterprise, but Home Premium, so it wasn`t easy to find any useful information. Thanks to this blog, and the algorithm above, I managed to install the language pack easily.

Wenbin, I called the noble prize committee to consider you to award the Noble Peace Prize. Maybe you are lucky :D

    Thanks a lot!!!

  31. A kind of stupid question, but can I not just add it to be switched back and forth through the OS? Do I need to delete English? o.o

    ReplyDelete
  32. Unless you use the ultimate version, otherwise no.

  33. My windows 7 originally is English. Then I change it into french. but how to get back into english? thanks

  34. Is this language pack fully working with windows updates? I got legit key and just wanna switch the language and wondering if it messes the windows updates.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi, Rully, just follow the steps to change the language to French.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Is this language pack fully working with windows updates?

    Yes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This worked for me. Thank you!

  38. What do you mean by "Prepare your language pack DVD"? Do you mean the original Windows 7 install media? I have a Dell so they don't include the DVD anymore. I can make one using the Dell backup and restore software, but I'm not sure where I might find the lp.cab file. Any help?

    1. The language pack DVD is different from Windows 7 install media. Dell doesn't supply this DVD.
